Oxford High Grads Make News at Respective Colleges

Josh Silkoff Class of 2015 of Oxford, was one of 19 volunteers who participated in the Penguin Plunge for Eastern Connecticut State University on Dec. 3. is majoring in Accounting.

Eastern students plunged into the chilly waters of Coventry Lake to raise money for the Special Olympics. Students or "penguins" solicited donations from family, friends and local businesses in order to take the plunge. More than $1,100 was raised during the event.

Incentive prizes for money raised along with individual and group awards were given in several categories. People who raised between $50-300 were given a bow tie and a t-shirt. Gift cards were given to people who raised a higher amount of money. Volunteers stood by to assist jumpers with warm beverages and towel support.

The "Penguin Plunge" fundraiser was created to provide funding for the Special Olympics' athletic competition for adults and children with disabilities. The Special Olympics offers its participants opportunities to develop and demonstrate their talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.

Eastern Connecticut State University is part of the Connecticut State University (CSU) system and is the state's public liberal arts university. Eastern serves more than 5,600 students each year on its Willimantic campus.

Jenna Miller, Class of 2015, of Oxford, performed in the Marist College Dance Ensemble fall semester showcase, "Dance Out Loud." , a Marist College Freshman, is a member of the Marist College Dance Ensemble (MCDE). With more than 200 members, the student-run organization is one of the College's largest and most active groups. The performance consisted of 19 pieces, choreographed completely by students, in a variety of genres such as hip-hop, Irish step, contemporary, tap, and more.
