Seymour Public Library

Seymour Library welcomes back Irish music troubadours Paul Pender and Deirdre McMorrow, Paul is a singer/guitarist songwriter from Dublin, Ireland who now resides in Durham , Connecticut. He is also an author, filmmaker and owned his own Irish pub in Wallingford. Deirdre McMorrow, formerly of the band "Banger and Mash" plays the traditional Irish fiddle. Together they will play a program of traditional old favorites and original Celtic songs.
This is a free live event and registration is not necessary for this program. For more information call the Library at 203-888-3903. Because this is a special event after normal library hours computers and circulation will remain closed for the evening. Seating starts at 6:30 pm and doors will close at 7:15.

Massaro is pleased to partner with founding Executive Director Caty Poole in bringing you a new adult Sustainable Nutrition Series for 2024.

These monthly classes will integrate the principles of a holistic approach to health, combining what nature has to offer with the science of nutrition and how the food we prepare is a pathway to personal and planetary health.

Upcoming sessions in (May) soil quality beyond composting, (June) harvesting herbs and making your own tea blends, and (July) creating a meal out of foraged items. Remember to dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes; we'll always spend a portion of our classes outside on the farm. Classes are never canceled but may be rescheduled in the event of heavy rain.

The Friends of the Library in Oxford will host it's annual Referendum weekend Book and Bake Sale on May 16, 17, 18 at the Oxford Library. The Friends are dedicating the sale to the memory of Delores Dean, long time member and former president of the Friends. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be used to establish a permanent Book Sale Display at the library.&nbsp;
The Book and Bake Sale will be held during the normal library operating hours on Referendum Day (Thursday), Friday, and&nbsp; Saturday. Additional information is available at the library website.

Great Hill United Methodist Church, 225 Great Hill Road, Seymour, will host an Indoor Flea Market on May 18, from 9 am to 2 pm in the church’s Fellowship Hall. 
Over twenty vendors, many of them new, will be participating selling modestly priced flea market items, jewelry, antiques, and beautiful hand-crafted items. Handicap accessible and plenty of parking. Refreshments available for sale.
All proceeds are used to fund our Mission Ministries, both locally and around the nation.

The Seymour Library welcomes Water W. Woodward, the state historian emeritus who will take us on a journey through some of the Nutmeg States most fascinating tales!
Mr. Woodward's talk will lead us from the early presence of the Dutch, to the dark days of witch hunts, life of state hero Nathan Hale and even Mark Twain's smoking habits.

Shubert Theatre

One of the most beloved stories is coming to New Haven when New Haven Ballet presents Beauty and the Beast at the Shubert Theatre on May 25 at 1:00 p.m. The Ballet also performs excerpts from the classical repertory of Paquita.
Angela He and Timothy Fountain lead the cast as Belle and the Beast, with all of the familiar characters, including Cogsorth, Lumiere, and Mrs. Potts, adding joy to the winsome and talented cast of dancers from the School.
“Beauty and the Beast touches hearts for a reason,” notes Artistic Director Lisa Kim Sanborn. “With humor, warmth, and a bit of nostalgia, it is easy to understand why this story and these characters have become worldwide favorites. The story is engaging and relevant today on so many levels. The dancers are fantastic, and we are excited for audience members, young and old, to see the production, which features new sets, costumes, and choreography,” Sanborn adds.
New Haven Ballet’s Student Company also presents excerpts from Paquita, with music by Ludwig Minkus and choreography after Marius Petipa, and a special presentation by Shared Ability, New Haven Ballet’s outreach program led by Kerry Kincy that features artists with and without disabilities. 
The Shubert Theatre is located at 247 College Street in the heart of New Haven’s popular downtown restaurant and shopping district. Tickets cost $26-$59 and may be purchased at Shubert.com or the Shubert Box Office at Tel. (203) 562-5666.

New Haven Ballet is a community-based ballet school in New Haven, Connecticut. Seymour Library welcomes Kevin Johnson from the Connecticut State Library History and Genealogy Unit. Mr. Johnson through extensive research in records, papers and books will bring Private William Webb to life.
For twenty years Mr. Johnson has been presenting the life of Private William Webb in a first person perspective that will vividly illustrate the struggle of the African Americans in the Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Pvt. Webb was an actual person, a native of Hartford. He was recruited in 1863 and served in the Twenty-Ninth (Colored) Regiment, Connecticut. He will tell of Pvt. Webb's early life in Hartford, his recruiting and training and the traumatic final battles of the Civil War he took part in.

The Life and Times of William Webb: an African American Civil War Soldier from Ct

The Seymour Library welcomes again the producer and host of the podcast "Amazing Tales From Off and On Connecticut's Beaten Path" Mike Allen. Mr. Allen produces weekly programs on people, places, and events from Connecticut history. His 120+ episodes can be found at his website www.amazingtalesct.com.
His current talk tonight will be Mike's own hometown of Danbury during the American Revolution. It was 1777, early in the Revolutionary War, and an easily accomplished&nbsp;weekend military mission into inland Connecticut was supposed to be a seminal military victory for the British in their attempts to put down the Patriot uprising. The objective was to march from Long Island Sound to Danbury and remove it as a key supply center for the Patriots. It was the first time the British had marched to do battle during the war.&nbsp;
It didn't work out as exactly planned.
