Bluebird Management Program This Thurs. at Audubon Center at 7 PM

Jewels of Blue: Eastern Bluebird Management, April 17, 7:00 PM, historic barn of the Audubon Center at Bent of the River, 185 East Flat Hill Road in the South Britain hamlet of Southbury, off Route 172.

It has been estimated that the Eastern Bluebird population has decreased 90% since the mid 1800’s due to the introduction of the starling and house sparrow from Europe. These species are more aggressive than the bluebird and will kill both adults and eggs to take over the nesting location.

Since the late 1960’s, populations have been recovering due in large part to the popularity of constructing bluebird nest boxes designed to keep starlings out and educating the public about how to deal with house sparrows.

Audubon Center at Bent of the River Land Manager, Jim Drennan, will lead a discussion on how to best attract, care for, and manage bluebirds. He will relate the challenges that the Audubon Center faces caring for their 25 eastern bluebird nest boxes. If time permits, he will walk participants out into the historic barn meadow to observe a bluebird habitat.
