Urges No Vote

There will be an increase of nearly a Mil sent to referendum next Tuesday May 13th.

Most of this increase is due to a full day kindergarten program. Funding was requested for the increased BOE budget from the finance board. Not all on the finance board agreed with the increase however, and the budget has been sent through due process and is now in the hands of the Oxford voters.

While a full day K program might be the proper path in the long run due to the controversial Common Core State Standards that is being implemented by the state education board this fact remains:

Kindergarten, half day or full day, is not a program that is mandated by the state.

During the FDK presentation it was determined that the program would have an annual cost of $533,000.00. It was later brought down to around $300,000.00 by the superintendent.

Right now the town cannot afford an expense in the BOE budget solely for 1 program.

It” too expensive for a non mandated program at this time and will only jeopardize future programs for older students already in place.

By judges orders Oxford must allow Garden Homes, a 124 unit mobile home park, to be built on Hurley road. The owner of that project predicts an increase of 60 school children into the system.

We also have Park City, Glendale, and another non age restricted housing development to look forward to, most likely this budget year.

With our current lack of Economic development projects that will offset the increase in this budget, the increase will fall on you the home owner.

This is not the time to implement programs that will be a burden on the tax payers of Oxford.

Please vote NO.
