Losing a Bet Costs Seymour First Selectman Dearly

Oxford first selectman wins first bet over the winner of the Seymour-Oxford football game.

The bet was pretty straightforward: Oxford's first selectman picks his town to win the game against neighboring Seymour, while Seymour's first selectman picks his town.

The stakes were another story, altogether, and may have cost one of them a few votes in the next election.

Miller agreed to wear an Oxford football jersey for an entire work day and during a Seymour Board of Selectmen meeting. Oxford won that game, 27-6 on Oct. 19, and on Tuesday, Miller lived up to his word. He wore the jersey to work and plans to wear it at the Board of Selectmen meeting later this evening.

Temple gave him the jersey belonging to his son, Andy Temple, a senior on the Oxford squad. The No. 65 navy blue jersey with white lettering complimented the light blue dress shirt that Miller wore underneath.

Miller will have his chance for revenge in the coming years as Oxford is moving into the Naugatuck Valley League, the league in which Seymour currently plays, next season.

Temple said via email that this could be the start of a very good rivalry between the two towns because both towns have a mutual respect for the other and that both towns put a "premium on sportsmanship.''
