Southbury Celebration Slated For Saturday Night

Southbury is celebrating its 225th Anniversary this weekend with the annual Southbury Celebration featuring fellowship, food, music and fireworks.

The 14th Annual Southbury Celebration will be on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Lake Stibbs at the Southbury Training School. Food and music will be offered, visitors are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for seating.

The Southbury Historical Society will be exhibiting photos and historical information along with a “Timeline of Southbury History”. The Historical Society will also have their 2012 annual holiday pewter ornament commemorating the Town’s 225th Anniversary on sale.

“The Kathy Thompson Band” will be performing hit soul and funk songs. Additional musical guests from Pomperaug High School will also be performing. Students Lauren Bell, Jessica Carpenter, Taylor Doyle and Johanna Fettinger will be singing a selection of songs accompanied by John Brewer on the guitar.

A free shuttle bus service will depart the Southbury Parks & Recreation building at 561 Main Street South at 5:30 p.m. The bus will then travel to the Heritage Village paddock parking lot for a 5:45 p.m. The bus will return immediately after the fireworks at approximately 8:15 p.m. Seats for the bus must be reserved by calling the Southbury Parks & Recreation Office.

A Food Court will offer a variety of options that are scheduled to include hot dogs, red hots, chili dogs, pizza, chicken tenders, curly fries, fried dough, cotton candy, baked goods, popcorn, donuts, soda, water, coffee and beverages. The Food Court will open at 5:30 p.m. and serve until after the fireworks conclude.

Southbury Police, Fire and Ambulance personnel and equipment will be on-site providing public safety information. The Southbury Volunteer Firemen’s Association Inc. will have their 102’ ladder truck, Engine #4 and their Heavy Rescue. Children can shoot the Brush Truck fire hose at several targets. The Southbury Ambulance Association ambulances and personnel will be on scene to answer questions. The Southbury Police plan to have their traffic enforcement vehicle, radar trailer and drug awareness information on display.

No alcohol is permitted at the event. Extensive free parking is on the STS Great Front Lawn. Due to congested event traffic and safety concerns, there will be no pedestrian walking, vehicle parking or parent “drop off/pick up” along Route 172. Handicap and Special Needs parking is available at the Lake Stibbs parking lot.

Per Brian Jones, co-chair of the Southbury Celebration, the event and fireworks will proceed as planned on Saturday, Sept 29. There will be food and music at 5:30 and fireworks at 7:30.
