Volunteers Help Build 'Lily Park' in Oxford

The park is named after 3-year-old girl who passed in a tragic accident.

Dozens of volunteers came out Saturday to help build a playground that will be named in honor of Lily Brooks, a 3-year-old girl who passed away after being involved in a motor vehicle collision that occurred Sept. 11 on Quaker Farms Road.

The playscape had been approved by residents during a town meeting on June 19. The town set aside $138,000 for the upscale playground on Great Oak Road between Quaker Farms School and Great Oak School.

When Lily Brooks passed last weekend, town officials decided to name the playground in her memory.

"Naming the playscape for Lily is a small and inadequate gesture but children and parents will know her name for years to come when they go to 'Lily Park' for a play date," First Selectman George Temple said. "Her spirit will be among friends."

The playscape is being made of recycled materials and will have a life warranty of 100 years. It is going to be used by children who are just beginning to walk to those who are 12-years-old.
