Bites Nearby: Rich Farm Ice Cream Shop

Summer on a cone in Oxford

— There isn't a food that screams summer more than a cone heaped high with scoops of decadent ice cream. And this shop has a variety of flavors to see locals through the impending summer days.

Opened in 1994, Rich Farm is a family-run dairy farm, with the ice cream shop also on the property. The counter-style shop has outdoor picnic benches and tables available in the summer months, and an inside dining area for colder weather and private events.

The vast variety of flavors includes favorites such as Cookies and Cream, Mocha Almond Fudge and Peanut Butter Cup, as well as rotating specials, which may include Coconut Chocolate Chunk, Chocolate Raspberry Truffle or Strawberry Rhubarb.

The ice cream is dense and creamy, with chunks of goodies. An example is the Maple Walnut, which has a pure maple taste (rather than that fake manufactured flavor) with crunchy walnuts. A true New England delight.

Rich Farm Ice Cream Shop is open daily, 11:30am - 9pm and is located just across the Southbury border at 691 Oxford Road (Route 67) in Oxford, 203-881-1040.

I have not been to the other place you are talking about in Newtown since I live in Southbury but Rich's Farm has AMAZING ice cream. No matter where we go we always compare it to Rich's Farm since their ice cream is alot creamier. The price is reasonable too for the amount they give you. Our family goes to Rich's Farm alot. Although there usually is a line...I have NEVER waited 40 minutes like someone mentioned in their post more like 20. It might look crazy at first but they usually have 4 or five windows open and it goes by pretty quick. Anyway, most people go to Rich's as a family outing. Hanging out outside in a pretty setting enjoying each other's company...so it might take a little longer but just enjoy your time together!!!!! If you are in that much of a rush for your ice cream go somewhere else. Also, the service is great. Although all the ice cream scoopers are young high schoolers or college students, they are VERY polite and professional. On another note, if you live in Newtown it is a little far to travel for ice cream.

I am a big fan of Rich Farm ice-cream. I think, as a resident of Oxford, it is important to support the smaller companies of this town. Now...... if the ice-cream and service wasn't good I wouldn't go back, but because it has everything (delicious ice-cream, cleanliness, friendliness, reasonable prices) I will continue to go back and recommend it to anyone! Kuddos to a fantastic business! See you on Father's Day!

We apologize if we confuse everybody with this column, but, because we intend Bites Nearby to be a spot where you can find places to eat in and out of town, the articles in this series are shared between Newtown, Oxford, Southbury and Woodbury-Middlebury. Sometimes it's good to hear recommendations for places to eat out of town, just in case you happen to be in the neighborhood. I've learned a lot from people who post comments in this column so keep them coming!

Rich's is Southbury's Ferris Acres. Both awesome!

i have not tried ferris acres ice cream but im sure its evey bit as good as rich farms. to me, (not a huge fan of ice cream) it all tastes good when i have it. Carveele, DQ, Friendlys... I like em all... in fact, the only icecream i hate is the cheap stuff you get at cheap buffet, all you can eat places. its like milk and ice mixed together...lol
