The business opened on July 3, 1994, by Dave and Dawn Rich on what is known as Ajello's Farm, according to the company's website. The couple, along with their children, opened the business to enhance their already existing dairy farm, which has been in the family for five generations, according to the website, which states "all of the ice cream is made daily on the farm, using only the highest quality ingredients."

In 2010, Connecticut Magazine readers voted Rich Farm the best ice cream parlor in Connecticut, and the shop has received several more accolades over the years.
