UPDATE: Sentinel Reports No Disciplinary Action Following Ambulance Crash

Oxford Ambulance Association assistant director's actions were under investigation.

UPDATED at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday

Valley Emergency Medical Services decided Tuesday to not take any disciplinary action against a board member from Oxford who got into a motor vehicle accident with a VEMS sport utility vehicle when she took it to Virginia for a personal matter last month, the Valley Independent Sentinel reports.

The online news site said the VEMS board met Tuesday and said the organization will update its vehicle usage policy and the board has closed its investigation.

It is a joke that VEMS lets there volunteers take vehicles out like this in the first place! Accidents happen and I do hope the driver will be okay but this shows a lack of respect for the tax payers money, I hope they at least used their own money to buy the gas.

So no disciplinary action was taken!?! I'm never donating to VEMS again!!! I think Oxford should look into getting a professional ambulance service rather then waste more of our money with this kind of crap.

For years she used the ambulance as her personal vehicle. A few years ago another prominent member of VEMS was involved in a drug involved DUI, taught a class at OHS, and served on the BOE, and yet nothing was done. We should be outraged at this abuse of power, and ashamed that we allow any agency, or political group to blatantly risk public safety, and receive a salary from tax dollars to boot.

Evening Rachael,I hope your holidays were nice and enjoyable. My feeling is VEMS should never had allowed the vehicle out of state unless for business.Same as Town owned vehicles should not be allowed out of Town unless for Town business.Unless there is an emergency situation.I am glad though that Mrs.Taggart was not injured.

Ed: I hope Santa was good to you. I was holding my breath when I saw you respond to the Patch poll for favorite holiday movies lol. I too am glad there were no injuries, but I do think that a blind eye and deaf ear have been turned to Ms. Taggert, and her family members that comprise a portion of the VEMS. This is far too important a position to allow this sort of incompetence and abuse.
Ed Rowland January 05, 2012 at 01:11 AM
Rachael,I have to say I agree with you on this one.Just this one.For now.Maybe moving forward from this point the Town as well as VEMS can change vehicle use policy,or at least look into the matter a little further.Another point to look at is the way vehicles are used within the Town. All in all I think Oxford is lucky to have the emergency service people we have.Big commitment and lots of sacrifice.
Rachael R January 05, 2012 at 01:26 AM
Ed: I'm going to ring the calendar to mark the day we agree! You are right to say we are fortunate. There are many dedicated, competent VEMS in Oxford...most volunteer their time. However no excuse can, or should be made for Ms. Taggert, and another member that I mentioned in my first post. Both of these related individuals make a very good salary from the town of Oxford, and would probably not have their employment continued , given he circumstances,in other communities. So many competent people would love to have the opportunity to serve the community, and receive a good wage in doing so, that I feel we risk public safety, and sell ourselves short allowing individuals to continue abusing our trust, and violating the safety of the town they are employed to protect.

On a similar note why arent all emergency ( ambulance) vehicles lettered to indicate they belong to Oxford ambulance? Also two of the unlettered black vehicles have a trailer hitch. Since when does is there a need to tow anything?
Beth January 05, 2012 at 03:45 AM
Yes, rachel and the same attorney that defended him is defending Oxford's past Tax Collector...He was an embarrassement to the town and got away with it..His attorney claimed that he was hypoglycemic instead of drunk...anyone with half a brain should realize that was just an excuse...

After all, this is the valley :)
J Bean January 09, 2012 at 11:51 PM
The vehicle wasn't even commissioned yet. She only used it to get the necessary miles on it that it needs to be able to be used for emergency calls.
J Bean January 09, 2012 at 11:56 PM
Was it "crap" when the OAA setup an emergency shelter for Oxford residents at the high school after the blizzard?
J Bean January 09, 2012 at 11:57 PM
It sounds like you have a personal vendetta against the parties involved. Abuse of power? Really? Both you and Beth should get your facts straight before you start looking idiotic. Oops too late.
Beth January 10, 2012 at 12:04 AM
Mr. Bean...using VEMS Vehicle "out of town, specifically Virgina for personal busienss has nothing to do with Oxford's OAA setting up emergency shelters for Oxford residents...all the towns do this.. I hope that the gas she filled the tank up with was from her pocketbook, if not this should be investigated...
J Bean January 10, 2012 at 12:05 AM
I assure you that Madalene Taggart is more than competent in serving the community. Like I said before, you definitely have some sort of personal vendetta against her and the other member and i now find everything you post biased and invalid.
J Bean January 10, 2012 at 12:06 AM
The vehicle involved wasn't commissioned yet. She only used it to help get the necessary miles on it so that it could be used for emergency calls.
J Bean January 10, 2012 at 12:07 AM
No one cares.
J Bean January 10, 2012 at 12:09 AM
Seriously I would love to know what you were doing for the town of Oxford after the blizzard. Search Madalene Taggart and you'll see what she was doing.
Beth January 10, 2012 at 12:16 AM
The facts are that she took the vehicle to Virgina for personal business. BTW no one is questioning Ms. Taggarts competency only the fact that she used it for personal business out of town..No vendetta here just the facts...You obviously are on their team...
Beth January 10, 2012 at 12:21 AM
I totally agree Jordan...
Beth January 10, 2012 at 12:28 AM
Mr. Bean - What Ms. Taggart was doing during or after the Blizzard has nothing to do with take a public vehicle out of town for personal reasons....For some reason, and I wonder what the reaon is, you refuse to see this??? Why do you keep equating what she did for the town with using a vehicle in a manner that should be illegal and if not should be in the future...
