Police have confirmed the pedestrian killed in an accident on south Route 25 at about 5:21 p.m. Wednesday as Chris (Christopher Lee) Mulligan, 18, of Newtown. Mulligan was allegedly crossing Route 25 at the intersection of Button Shop Road when he was hit by a white box truck heading north and died at the scene.
The driver was Otamir Cordeiro, 64, of Waterbury, according to reports.
The accident is still under investigation, according to police. Route 25 is expected to reopen around midnight.
Update: 8:12 p.m.
Newtown Police Chief Michael Kehoe confirmed to Patch that a pedestrian was killed tonight after being hit by a truck on Route 25. The person's identity has not been released.
Police remain on scene investigating, and traffic delays continue.
Update: 7:15 p.m.
A section of Route 25 from Huntingtown to Button Shop is closed after the accident, say drivers who have been caught in the traffic. Police have redirecting traffic. Police report that the area may be closed "for some time" as the investigation continues.
Drivers report being stranded in Sand Hill Plaza, as Main Street is still closed, and delays are upwards of 45 minutes to reach detours. Drivers report detours are available on Toddy Hill Road and Orchard Hill Road.
Multiple police and emergency vehicles are on the scene after an accident on Route 25 near Button Shop Road. Southbound traffic is backed up for nearly a mile. Police confirmed the accident, but could provide no more information at this time.
