Town Still Going After Repayment from Former Tax Collector

Oxford officials meet behind closed doors to discuss ways to go about getting repaid by Karen Guillet.

Oxford officials are investigating ways in which they can attempt to recoup money from former tax collector Karen Guillet, who is imprisoned after stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the town.

An ad hoc committee of local officials met behind closed doors in executive session Thursday to plot a "deposition strategy" in the town's civil lawsuit against Guillet, in which it hopes to obtain $671,768, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.

Oxford First Selectman George Temple told the Sentinel that the town is going to vigorously pursue the repayment.

“I’m going to get every penny that’s coming to the town of Oxford that I possibly can,” he reportedly said. “I want to know what assets are out there and where this money went.”

However, recouping that money might be difficult as Guillet's attorney, Dominick Thomas, told the Senintel she has nothing left to give besides what she already has, which is about $41,000. The state has revoked Guillet's pension.

owned by Guillet, whose 1,652-square-foot saltbox-style Colonial is assessed at $217,000, which is 70 percent of the fair market value of the property.
