"Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could so this is by not voting." – Franklin D. Roosevelt

Updated at 7:12 p.m.

As of 7 p.m., 2,984 people had voted in Oxford. That is about 34 percent of those registered.

Original Story

As of 5 p.m., 2,360 people, or about 26 percent of those registered, had voted in the municipal election in Oxford. By comparison, in 2011, the last time there was a municipal election in Oxford, a total of 3,346 people, or about 39 percent, had voted.
There is an average of 262 people per hour voting, though more people tend to vote when they get out of work, so that could drive the numbers higher before the poll closes at Quaker Farms School.
There are a total of 8,550 people registered to vote in Oxford as of Tuesday. Of those, 2,673 are registered Republicans; 1,485 are registered Democrats; 4,262 are unaffiliated and 138 are registered with other minor parties. Oxford voters are choosing whether they like the direction in which the town is heading under the administration of Republican George Temple, or whether they want to give political newcomer David Heim, a Democrat, a chance to serve as the town's top elected official.

Voters will also choose candidates for the Board of Education, the Board of Finance, the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of Assessment Appeals. The tax collector, town clerk and town treasurer spots are not contested.

Poling location: Quaker Farms School, 30 Great Oak Road, Oxford

Time: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
