THE WORK BASKET: VINTAGE SEWING ACCESSORIES ON VIEW AT THE TWITCHELL-ROWLAND HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

Making and mending the family's clothing and home decor was a traditional chore of the women who lived in what is now the Twitchell-Rowland Homestead Museum.  For safe-keeping and convenience, their thread, needles, thimbles and other necessities were gathered in a basket or box.  "The Work Basket: Vintage Sewing Accessories, 1900 - 1950" features sewing containers and their contents from 3 Oxford women as well as collections of needle books, pin cushions and a scrapbook kept by a young mother as a memento of clothing she sewed for her 4 children. Also on view is a large barn loom from Oxford's Jensen Family farm used to manufacture cloth from linen and wool.  Further information may be obtained by calling 203 888-0230.
