Time to Answer the Call...

Volunteer for the Vets!

Well if you are not quite ready to run or walk, do not fret.  You can still help honor our veterans on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th.  The Oxford Freedom Run Committee needs volunteers.  You have just the right stuff.  Be one of the few, the proud, the Freedom Run Volunteers. Become part of a band brothers (and sisters).

Penguin Patrol: We need 4 to 6 volunteers to help the Penguin do light stretching and exercise with the children. The task here is to assemble the children for the Rock Hopper Fun Run.  You will also participate in the run with them.  It is only a short distance (Town Hall to Oxford Center via Route 67 and back). As you run, you follow behind or stay on the side of the pack to be sure no one falls behind or strays off.  Think of it as herding. (You will be able to say you ran in the race...ah hem briefly.)

Pre-Race Runners: This task requires you to be at the Town Hall by 7:30 AM.  As the participants arrive and register they need to sign in, obtain a race number, and a shirt.  We need 4 volunteers to help do this and to "run" between the sign- in tables to coordinate this. OK, even if you walk, you can do this.  But, the pre-race excitement may cause you to run (in an enjoyable way, no sweat).

Shirt Sharp Shooters: If you are a seamstress or tailor at heart, this is your position. 2 or 3 volunteers are needed to help size and hand out t-shirts to the entrants.

Water Warriors and Food Fighters: This elite group of 6 to 8, must be ready to handle (not really no need to get close) the sweaty mass of humanity as the race pack crosses the finish line.  Those runners are thirsty and hungry.  The committee will have assembled ample food and refreshments, but needs volunteers to help pass them out.  One of the percs of this position is that you can "test" the items.  Be careful though, generally people who volunteer in a race/walk leave having burned not added calories.

Dog Tag Checkers: Each child who enters the Rock Hopper Fun Run receives "Dog Tags" to commermorate the race.  These are provided by Margaret West the Oxford Town Clerk.  They are placed on the children by Oxford veterans.  The committee needs 2 or 3 volunteers to help co-ordinate this task.  If you help at this, you will be close to the ice cream.  Although the Oxford Lions are pretty adept at singling out the children for ice cream, you may get lucky.

Well the Freedom Run/Walk Committee hopes that you do come out to run, walk, volunteer or watch this wonderful event.  It is a fun way to honor all of our veterans.  After, you can stay to watch the parade and the memorial festivities put on by the Oxford American Legion.  Truth be told, without the Legion's approval the race/walk could not happen. Thank you.
