Obituary: Virginia Salvesen, of Oxford, 91

Virginia “Jinny” Ruth Salvesen, 91, of Oxford, beloved wife for 67 years to the late Ralph A. Salvesen, died Jan. 17, 2014, at The Hearth in Southbury.

Born on July 19, 1922, in Staten Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of Harold and Veronica (Jones) Brundage. Mrs. Salvesen also resided in Pearl River, N.Y., Marshall Mo., East Brunswick, N.J., Dade City, Fla., and Southampton, N.J. 

She was a homemaker for many years and worked in the office for Raritan Newspaper after her children were grown. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oxford, and enjoyed activities with the senior group at Oxford Congregational Church (United Church of Christ).

Her passion for quilting and sewing resulted in many amazing quilts, wall hangings, table runners and other keepsakes for family members and others to treasure. As avid Airstreamers, their love of travel brought her and Ralph to many areas and events throughout the U.S and Canada.

A loving and devoted wife, mother and nana, she is survived by six children, Lynn Wirth (David) of Hillsborough, N.J., Roger (Patricia) of Buckeye, Ariz., Donald (Melanie) of Rio Rancho, N.M., James (Nadine) of Ridgefield, Joan Rickle (Layne) of Gastonia, N.C., and Tricia Van Buiten (Chris) of Oxford. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Harold Brundage of Palermo, Maine, and David Brundage (MaryAnn) of Lakeland, Fla., a brother-in-law, Clifford Salvesen of Kutztown, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Alice Salvesen of Scotch Plains, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a great-grandson. 

A memorial service in celebration of Mrs. Salvesen’s life will take place at a date to be announced. There will be no calling hours. 

The Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home of Seymour has been entrusted with the arrangements. Contributions in Mrs. Salvesen’s memory may be made to ELCA World Hunger Appeal or Lutheran Disaster Response (www.elca.org/givenow).
