Full day Kindergarten

To Oxford taxpayers, The Full Day Kindergarten Committee will make a presentation to the Board of Ed on Tuesday night 01/28/14 at 7:00 PM at the OHS Media Center on the third floor. There will be two audiences of citizens segments at this meeting for public input. The committee will recommend that the BOE approve the implementation of Full Day Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year at a meeting to be announced in February. This will not be a referendum question.   While there would be academic advantages for our youngest students, an ADDITIONAL ANNUAL cost to the school budget for Full Day Kindergarten will be between $500,000 and $600,000. This, plus normal contractual increases in the BOE budget could lead to a significant tax increase or reductions in programs for older students. I don't believe Oxford can afford to implement this program until we have significant growth in the grand list.   While I am very confident that the BOE will make the correct decision, public support would be helpful. The ad hock committee sent a survey for only parents of children of kindergarten age asking if they wanted it. What do you think their answer was?    School Board meetings and agendas can be found here... The formation of the kindergarten committee was first discussed in the October 8th meeting minutes.
