My Thoughts on Full Day Kindergarten

As a member of the Board of Education and a member of the Ad Hoc Committee charged with studying this issue, I would like the community to know that I neither support, nor do I oppose full day kindergarten. If there is an educational and curricular NEED for full day kindergarten, and the cost for implementation is not prohibitive, then I will support this initiative. If not, then I won't. This also happens to be the BOE Row A position on this topic. I hope Row B candidates feel the same way.

I am concerned that parents supporting this initiative are being pulled into a political game. This is an educational/financial issue, not a political one. I have to point out that we are not off to a good start. This topic is currently being pushed by ultra-liberal BOE member Steve Brown, who said NOTHING about full day kindergarten for two years. Suddenly, four weeks before an election, this topic becomes a major initiative and a Democrat campaign issue. Smells political to me, and it shouldn't be...

Let's look at the issue of full day kindergarten objectively and let the facts guide us. This community needs to do what is best for our youngest students and our taxpayers. Keep the politics out!
