Community Corner

Why I am running for the Board of Education

It was an honor to serve you as Selectman in 2009-11. I was asked to run and chose to because, time and time again, the people of Oxford were supportive of me and my family when we needed it most. Serving is my way of giving back in a small way to the community that has been so special to me and I do it willingly.

In the two years that I have been away from Town Hall, I have found a few ways to contribute to our town and beyond. I serve on 2 volunteer boards that both make a positive, state-wide impact for Organ Donation, a cause very close to me. Also, I was asked to serve on the Superintendent Search Committee that led to the hiring of our current superintendent and returning stability to that position.  Many know me as a coach as well. I enjoy that and find it rewarding to coach our young players as I was many years earlier here.

My term as Selectman gives me the experience of building and passing budgets in the Town of Oxford.  We also approved construction projects for our school buildings. I approached each issue that was put in front of me by “doing my homework” and making an informed decision. If it was best for our town, I supported it regardless of which party thought of it. If I opposed something, I attempted to do so in a thoughtful, respectful way. The people of Oxford deserve to hear both viewpoints and make up their own mind and should be able to free of politics or personal attacks.

I do not do these things with a personal agenda or other motives. I choose to serve because these opportunities allow me to give back to those things in our town that have made such a positive impact in my life. My daughter is already off to college and, if I am fortunate enough to win a seat tomorrow, my son will graduate before my term is up on the Board of Education.

There are issues that face our school district and I know that full day kindergarten has been a topic of the fall campaign. I have pledged to take the same approach that I believe has been my style all along. I pledge to give it thoughtful consideration and a serious look. I will not take a quick stance that may be politically expedient in a campaign with too few facts to garner a few votes. Please remember when you vote tomorrow that we do not know what the School District will face in the next 4 years. Anyone who believes that need only to look at Sandy Hook Elementary to see that things can change in an instant.

Choose a candidate that does the hard work, leaves party politics at the door, and makes solid, informed decisions in the best interest of our children. I believe my track record shows that I do and I know that my running mates Melissa, Paula, John, and Susan all bring the the same style and enthusiasm to the task.

I hope you come out to vote and I would appreciate your support tomorrow at the polls.
