Motorists in the Southington area are advised to use extra caution and be observant while driving due to the sighting of a moose this morning on West Street near Interstate 84. The moose was last seen entering a swamp area that abuts the highway.
Moose near roadways pose a particular danger because once struck, they are more likely to collapse through a vehicle windshield due to their tall stance. They are also difficult to see when driving at night because of their dark color.
All moose and deer vehicle collisions should be reported to local or state authorities, or DEEP Environmental Conservation Police Officers (860-424-3333). Additionally, residents throughout the state are encouraged to report moose sightings on the DEEP Web site athttp://www.ct.gov/deep/wildlife.
