Former Oxford Tax Collector Investigation Ongoing

Criminal investigators meet with town officials on Tuesday.

A State Police detective met with Oxford Finance Director James Hliva in Town Hall Tuesday as part of the continuing investigation into former tax collector Karen Guillet, the Valley Independent Sentinel reports.

Hliva characterized the visit as routine; the visits apparently happen every few months as the criminal investigation continues, according to the Sentinel.

Guillet, who served as tax collector for 24 consecutive years, is accused of stealing more than $670,000 from the tax collector's office between 2003 and 2009 before someone in the office blew the whistle. The town has filed a civil lawsuit that is still pending, as is the criminal investigation. Guillet has not been charged criminally; she has admitted to stealing at least $3,092, First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers said.
