DNA Records Needed to ID Woman Who Died in House Fire

A Seymour woman died inside a house fire. The Oxford Fire Department helped put out the flames.

It will take some time before authorities know the identity of a woman whose body was found inside a garage in Seymour Wednesday after fire broke out in the garage and nearby home.

The Valley Independent Sentinel reports that the homeowner's name is Tania Sapko, but it is unclear at this point whether she was the person whose body was found, though neighbors say they haven't seen her since the fire.

“There was an autopsy done this (Thursday) morning. Cause of death of was smoke inhalation,” Fire Marshal Paul Wetowitz told the Valley Indy. “It is a female, but we need to use DNA records in order to make a positive ID. That may take several weeks.”
