Police: Dodging $34 Cab Fare Leads to Court Date for Oxford Woman

The following arrest information was supplied by the Oxford Resident Trooper's Office. It does not indicate a conviction.

A $34 cab fare that police say a local woman didn’t want to pay may end up costing her a lot more in court.

Candy Gliszczynski, 37, of 479 Chestnut Tree Hill Road, told a cab driver to drop her off in front of her house around 7:19 a.m. Wednesday and then refused to pay the $34 cab fee, said Oxford Resident State Trooper David Hare.

The cab driver called police, and Hare charged Gliszczynski with sixth-degree larceny, a Class C misdemeanor. She is scheduled to be arraigned at Derby Superior Court on July 11.

Does this seem like a huge waste of tax payer $$$ to bring this woman to court over $35.00? Isn't there some other type of punishment she could do to pay for this heinous act? Seriously, $35.00 ?? Just give her the option of paying the $35.00 to the cab co. and paying maybe a $200.00 fine, or doing 200 Hrs of community service and paying a fine or goint to court. im sure that getting caught this one time is bad enough and now her name is on this site and probably in some local paper and the embarrasment alone is bad... I mean, she is 37 years old.. thats practically an adult by todays standards, dont waste or $$$ please we pay out enough already!

Craig - If someone walked into your store and stole $35 out of your cash register, you would have a much different opinion. If the dollars it costs to prosecute (regardless of the punishment) deter a few others from trying the same thing, then it's money well spent.

..And its exactly that type of "Thinking with your ego instead of your head" that is not helping our over burdened justice system, feeding the shark-lawyers huge salaries, making all our taxes go up... and all for $35.00? If I had a store, and if she ran out with $35.00 and if the police got her, Id gladly take the $35.00 back and feel good about her paying a fine and doing community service.. why would NOT getting the $$$ back and having her pay for a lawyer (which she most likly doesnt have the $$ for so she will use a PUBLIC defender at what? oh yeah, the PUBLICS cost) be better?Think about it...

You're contradicting yourself. It's in court where they decide fines, punishment, probation community service, etc. It's also the court that monitors community service. And it's our constitution that guarantees a fair trial. So all that's going to happen anyway. The only other option is to get your money back and look the other way, which personally, does not sit well with me because it freely invites others to try and get away with it, too. You'll get no argument from me about our court system being overburdened. And admittedly, I don't have the solution for it. But I do feel that using the current issues of an overburdened court system as an excuse to overlook any criminal activity should NOT be part of the solution. I'm happy that Oxford police went after this person.

Im happy the cops got her to, in fact if the driver got ahold of her and dealt out his own brand of punishment, Id be all for that as well... I hear you on useing the overburdnend court system as an excuse to overlook crimes but what i am trying to say is that we figure out a way to not add to the justice systems problems and try to find a solution to deal with these smaller issues. There probably isnt a solution but it would be nice. maybe something like dealing with her in a sorta "small claims' court setting.. moer like a "Small crimes court" lol only a judge, this woman, the arresting officer and the cab driver. We need a sherrif... who could handle this stuff, someone who would grab her by the back of the neck, drag her to the cab co. make her pay the cab fair and then pay for lunch for the whole place, then take her out to rte 67 and make her wear a bright orange jumpsuite that says "I ran out on a cab fair of $34.00, I am scum" while she sweeps the road... lol On another note, I am surprsed the cops caught her.. what did she do? have the cab bring her to her home? lol
