MONROE -- An 84-year-old Monroe woman received a call from another woman claiming to be from the U.S. Social Security Administration and was asked for her Social Security number and bank account information, according to a police complaint filed by her son on Feb. 26.
"Unfortunately, she gave out the information," Lt. Brian McCauley said.
The victim's son called the Social Security Administration, which confirmed that nobody from the office had called his mother, police said.
So far, McCauley said no questionable activity was found on the identity theft victim's accounts.
McCauley said financial institutions do not initiate phone calls or emails requesting personal account information.
