Naugatuck Man, 20, Killed in Seymour Crash

Seymour police say the accident occurred at 1 a.m. in their town.

A 20-year-old man from Naugatuck died in a one-car accident in Seymour at 1 a.m. Wednesday, the Seymour Police Department has confirmed.

Korey Jordan, of 68 Anderson St., was killed after being involved in a motor vehicle accident on South Main Street, or Route 115, in the area of Pearl Street in Seymour, Lt. Paul Satkowski said in a news release.

Police said they found a single motor vehicle facing southbound in the northbound travel lane of South Main Street with heavy damage to the vehicle. Four male occupants were located inside of the vehicle, police said. Jordan was the right front seat passenger; he was found to be trapped in the front seat after the vehicle sustained heavy damage. He was unconscious and had to be extricated from the vehicle by Seymour Fire Department personnel.

Jordan was treated on scene by Seymour Ambulance personnel and was transported to Waterbury Hospital where he later died from injuries sustained from the accident, Satkowski said.

Two rear seat passengers, 20-year-old Joseph Staffier of Hawkins Street, Derby, and a 17-year-old male, whose name was not released because of his age, were also injured in the accident. They were taken local hospitals for treatment. Both were listed in fair condition with non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday, police said.

Satkowski said preliminary investigation revealed the accident occurred when a vehicle operated by 20-year-old Manuel Esteves, of 33 Meadfarm Road in Seymour, was traveling northbound on South Main Street.

"According to witnesses, Esteves passed another vehicle at a high rate of speed on South Main Street in the area prior to Balkos Service Station," Satkowski said in the release. "As the vehicle approached the intersection of Pearl Street, Esteves’ vehicle failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and struck a utility pole head on, primarily on the right side of the vehicle, just after the intersection of Pearl Street."

Esteves received serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment.

Traffic was rerouted around the scene of the crash for several hours immediately following the accident.  The accident remains under investigation by Seymour Police Department Accident Reconstruction personnel.  Speed and possible alcohol have been determined to be contributing factors to the accident.  As of this time there are no criminal charges.
