Newtown Police Chief: Ban Assault Weapons

Kehoe said the weapons used in the Dec. 14 shooting were stronger than those his department carries, according to NBC News.

Newtown Police Chief Michael Kehoe didn't mince words in his message to the White House.

"Ban assault weapons, restrict those magazines that have so many bullets in them, shore up any loopholes in our criminal background checks," he said in an interview with NBC News.

In the interview, Kehoe spoke frankly about what he saw at Sandy Hook Elementary School on the day in December when 20 children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history.

Newtown's Police Chief said the shooter was carrying heavier firepower than his officers. "We never like to think we're outgunned in any situation we're dealing with," he told NBC News.

Since the shooting, Kehoe has taken an active leadership role in his response. A week afterwards, he issued a statement to the community assuring residents schools were safe and police were hard at work.

"Our police, fire, and emergency medical personnel reacted quickly and without hesitation, rapidly responding to Sandy Hook Elementary School," he said. "Their professionalism was heartwarming to witness; our community is proud of them."

More recently Kehoe and the Newtown Police Department have been working to ensure officers have access to health benefits and leaves of absence as they recover from their work on December 14 and afterward.

Kehoe's message comes as the advocacy group Sandy Hook Promise launches a nationwide campaign for change in the wake of the shootings. Gun control remains an option on its agenda, as U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy told reporters.

"We have to fundamentally change our approach," co-founder Tom Bittman told press Monday. "It’s not just what government should do. It’s not just what I should do. It’s not just what you should do. It’s what we should do together."

"Newtown's Police Chief said the shooter was carrying heavier firepower than his officers. 'We never like to think we're outgunned in any situation we're dealing with,' he told NBC News." Oh, puh-leeez. Why am I betting his department's weapons inventory is a tad heavier than a semi-auto and a couple of pistols? Twenty-six people died because, when it counted, those aforementioned weapons were twenty minutes away. And I am sure that another law will take care of the whole problem,, clue for you chief,, criminals DONT obey laws,, if they did there would be no arson, no rapes and no murders anymore.

Exactly. CNN reported police arrived 20 minutes after the first 911 call. Where is the focus on that? Where the heck were they that it took 20 MINUTES. The chief is trying to keep the focus off the response.

He also doesn't know that assault weapons are already banned in the entire nation. You need a special licence to get one. Shelton caries M4 riffles in their patrol cars on a daily basis, I'll bet Newtown does too.

well he obviously even the chief doesn't know the difference between Assault weapons and Assault look alike weapons. And thats a HUGE problem in this country. This kid used a hunting / sporting weapon, it was not an assault weapon, did it look like one? heck yeah it did... but honestly, it wasnt...plain and simple, it was just a rifle made to look like a real military weapon. Believe it or not, ALOT of people out there just think it looks cool. Like a hot rod or motorcycle... looks do play a huge roll in guns too! Now the thing is, would our military go running off into battle with this same weapon Lanza used? nope! not if it was the one Lanza used... they would however, use it had it been the FULL AUTOMATIC "Assault" version of it. And THATS the difference. its just ridiculous to ban something just cause it looks different... if it was a person we were talking about it would be out and out racism. Now ask yourselfs... am I a racist? well, mabey you dont judge people by their skin tone or background but you cant tell me you dont have the racist inclinations in you if you find it that easy to blame one type of object for all the woes in the world based solely on how it looks!

The 1994 gun ban is still in effect here in CT. The Cheif in Newtown was using talking points. Yesterday up at the capital. a bill is being concider to force all gun owners to carry liabilaty insurance. Thay are also concidering a 50 percent tax on ammunition. This will only affect law abiding gun owners and will not prevent another tragety or stop any gun violence. Crack down on the criminals and enforce the laws. Strict penaltys and hard time in prison will work. Contact your legislator and give them your opinion before we loose our rights.

Anyone who is about to do what Adam lanza did would most likely not care too much about liability ins. or that the ammo was 50% more $$, or that his weapon was banned... How is that going to stop any more of these things from happening? All its gonna do is put more $$$ into the politicians and big Insurance companies pockets... OMG!! Hold on just a minute!! how can we be so stupid and not see this before??? Its not safety or anything like that, its about the politicians making more $$ and taking care of their big business pals yet again, there it is, thats the rub...
