No Jail Time in Fatal Accident Involving Oxford Girl, 3

Waterbury resident Garrett Baker, 31, avoided jail time Tuesday for his role in a fatal accident that claimed the life of 3-year-old Oxford resident Lily Brooks, WTNH News 8 reports. 

Baker was sentenced to a six month suspended sentence and 1 year of probation, WTNH reports. His attorney claims, Baker was distracted at the time of the accident, possibly by a GPS system, WTNH reports. 

Baker was arrested in February after an investigation into the accident that took place on Quaker Farm Road shortly after noon on Sept. 11. 

According to police, Baker was driving his Ford F550 when he crossed over the centerlines and crashed into the Subaru Outback being driven by Amy Brooks. 

Brooks and Baker both sustained minor injuries, as did Baker’s passenger, Nicole Bahr, however Brooks’ daughter, Lily, was incapacitated when emergency responders arrived.

Lily was rushed to the hospital by Life Star helicopter, where she passed away 3 days later.

At the time of the accident, police said they were investigating whether Baker might have been on prescription medication.

Baker was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, distracted driving and failure to drive on the right side of the road.
