Campaign Notebook: Shays Compares McMahon Strategy to 'Nothing'

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Senate

Christopher Shays (R) has posted a video of Seinfeld's "Nothing" bit on his campaign website, comparing the infamous sketch to Republican opponent Linda McMahon's campaign strategy.

Fourth District

Steve Obsitnik (R): Republican candidate Steve Obsitnik has agreed to refund campaign contributions, reports the Connecticut Post. Obsitnik won the nomination at the Republican convention on May 18, thus avoiding the primary election and no longer needs the funds intended for its campaign.

Jim Himes (D): Himes, along with U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-3) and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D), announced a $938,360 grant for Bridgeport's The WorkPlace. The grant will help living conditions for 300 veteran families in Southwestern Connecticut, including housing stability and receiving benefits.

This is a no-brainer - McMahon is an opportunist. Shays not only has the experience, he is a competent and honest statesman who addresses the policy not which aisle.
Ed Rowland July 19, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I enjoyed the Seinfield sketch. Most politicians are opportunists.

When Oxford was moved from the 5th district into the 4th, a reporter asked Rep. Chris Shays what he knew about Oxford. He responded by saying not much but I hear they have a bunch of people running around in pickup trucks with gun racks in the windows up there... Kind of difficult for me to vote for that guy to represent my views in Washington.
Dave July 19, 2012 at 02:08 PM
I have yet to see a Pickup with a gun rack driving around Oxford. (Lack of respect on Shays part for the citizens of Oxford!) Linda is a state resident and employs many CT. residents including some from Oxford at some time or another. She knows how to run a business and has been where we are, She never gave up and became a very successful business Woman. I would support Linda over that career politician any day. Did he just come up here to campaign? We don't need more of the same in Washington And I will support Linda on 9-14 at the poles.

You are polite as usual. I would have used a different word.
Ed Rowland July 19, 2012 at 06:36 PM
Dave,I have seen more than a few trucks with gunracks.Anyways,Mr.Shays is a career politician. No way around that. But what troubles me with Mrs.McMahon is that she spent $50 million to try to win the last time.Thats reckless spending as far as I'm concerned.Yes she has been sucessful in business and has created many jobs over the years.Although she is not a Washington insider and I do believe she would do a better job than Mr.Shays I am not fully convinced she is the best person for the job.Truthfully I am not at all impressed with any of the candidates running for office this cycle.Sadly it will end up as status quo again.Real change needs to start on the local level with sharp minded people without personal agendas.
Dave July 19, 2012 at 07:04 PM
Ed that $50 million was her own money, Bloomathal used ours! Think about how much of Linda's money went into our local economy. I was just looking at some of her campaign items and they all said made in the USA. Bloomathal took from our tax dollars to run his campaign so he took money that could have been used for a better purpose.(sorry if I spelled his name wrong if I did ) That is money you and I have to pay back in taxes. Linda made her own money and has every right to spend it the way she sees fit.

My first experience with Christopher Shays was this past March during the Lincoln Dinner Dance sponsored by the ORTC when he decided to rudely bypass paying to enter the function with the excuse that he was not staying for dinner. No he did not stay when the meal was served, but he did stay long enough to make sure he spoke with everyone and left. It's like attending the "Made in CT Fair" and not wanting to pay for the entrance fee because you are not buying anything but wanted to shop around!!! It was a very SHADY thing to do, Linda has my vote.
Dave July 19, 2012 at 07:28 PM
He didn't even offer to pay the $10.00 to go to our picnic last month but walked around taking pictures with non-supporters.
David Yish July 19, 2012 at 08:12 PM
Ed, I have seen a few gunracks too and I am not saying anything one way or the other about them. The fact that Shays would bring it up speaks volumes about what his opinion of us "Non-Fairfield County" people is though. Say what you may about Linda McMahon, I have had the opportunity to meet her on a few occasions and she is genuine. She believes what she says and she fully commits and works hard on whatever she is involved with. Maybe that is why she spent so much of her own money last time. Wouldn't it be easy for her to sit back and enjoy all that wealth and her grandchildren? I think she truly believes she can make a difference and I agree with her. That is why she has my vote----again.

Craig Zac July 19, 2012 at 08:49 PM
Hey Mr. Shayes, now jess what in tarnation, is so bad about havin me a gun rack in mah truck? i needs it for when i go up in the woods to check on mah still.. cause all us Oxfordians are red neck, no teefs havin, gun toting, moonshin makin hillbillies! Craig Zac July 19, 2012 at 08:55 PM
Im waiting for the new Mcmahon campaign slogan: "Vote for Linda, Cause Stone Cold said so!!"
Ed Rowland July 20, 2012 at 12:29 AM
Dave Yish,Mr.Shays showed he has no class what so ever.I did vote for Mrs.McMahon last time and will most likely vote for her again.I would welcome the chance to meet her.And as you say she could be sitting back and enjoying her wealth and her grandchildren.Enjoy the evening.
Tanya Carver July 20, 2012 at 01:59 AM
Hi Ed, I hope you get a chance to meet Linda, you will be surprised of what she has overcome in her lifetime. Do you remember the "Smith Barney" commercial, we made money the old fashion way, "We earned it". When you have a moment, do take a look at the following link: http://www.lindasplan.com/ At least she has a plan!!!
Tanya Carver July 20, 2012 at 02:01 AM
Craig, you quack me up!!!
Ed Rowland July 20, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Good Morning Tanya,I looked at Lindas plan link you suggested. At least she has a plan with some common sense. Here's to pickup trucks and gun racks and free admission.lol
Tanya Carver July 20, 2012 at 01:05 PM

Sorry that I'm adding my comment so late. I don't spend too much time on-line. For anyone who is considering voting for Mrs. McMahon, you had better do some research. Mainly to prevent yourselves from making a mistake. http://articles.courant.com/2010-10-01/business/hc-world-wrestling-entertainment-film20101001_1_film-tax-tax-credits-wwe http://www.ctpost.com/default/article/McMahon-no-stranger-to-lobbyists-440708.php#page-1 And there is a lot more including some very serious questions about her integrity. Mr. Shays is no bargain either. So this Republican will NOT be voting for a Republican in November unless you count writing my own name in. Plus, I know more about the duties of Congress as specified in the Constitution than those two.
Craig Zac August 04, 2012 at 08:09 PM
So, who do we fote for? someone has to get voted in. which one? Im kinda going with Linda right now.... just because shays seems like a shuckster who would be an ambulance chaser, lawyer if he wasnt running. He always seems like he's got his fingers crossed behind his back when he is speaking.
Craig Zac August 04, 2012 at 08:30 PM
"The entertainment company co-founded by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon, an aggressive champion of smaller government, is the fourth-biggest recipient of state film tax credits among 78 production firms to get them.Through mid-August, the state had awarded nearly $10 million in film tax credits to Stamford-based World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., an accounting provided by the state shows This looks to me like she takes care of her business and she will take care of ct if she wins. Besides, how many other business are taking advantage of these tax credits as well? because she is running for senate, this is bad? The other article is more about the WWE lobbying for reasons like getting advertising on the WWE broadcasts and such. Although I absolutly think lobbying has NO PLACE in politics at all, without a second guess, lobbying should be look at as pay offs and should be outlawed.I do think the WWE needs to be aware of what they are doing from time to time and should distance its self from washington as long as linda is going to run for office. With some of the WWE's lobbying being questionable, I don't think its anywhere near as bad as the oil industry buying politicians, or big agriculture paying off politicians for special favors, or the gun makers, tobacco industry, auto makers, health ins. companies, Religeons..... all of them buying favors, or giving votes for politicians to take care of them.
