Final Count: 200,000 New Connecticut Voters Register Ahead of 2012 Election
Young people between the ages of 18 and 29 make up roughly half of all new voters who have signed on since Jan. 1 of this year.
In the past six weeks, over 100,000 Connecticut citizens registered to vote in the 2012 presidential election and more than 200,000 new voters have registered in total since Jan. 1, according to Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.
On Monday, which is National Voter Registration Day, Merrill announced that nearly half of all new voters — just over 90,000 — this year are young people between the ages of 18 and 29. This was similar to 2008, when younger voters represented the largest group that registered in that year.

The total number of active registered voters in Connecticut is 2,089,311 – just shy of the all-time record of active registered voters measured prior to the 2008 presidential election, Merrill said.
“I think this is a very encouraging sign,” Merrill said. “Many people are now focused on the critical questions facing our country and our state as we head to the polls tomorrow, and the trick is to take that focus and turn it into action.”

Unaffiliated voters, those not registered to any party, still make up the largest voting bloc — and the same goes for the newly registerd voters. In 2012 roughly 92,000 unaffilited voters signed on, compared to just over 70,000 new Democrats and 33,000 new Republicans.
And in a presidential year, between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, registration numbers and turnout numbers typically jump higher than in midterm election years.
Here is a list of all the breakdown figures on new voters in the 2012 election, provided by the secretary of the state’s office.
