Oxford Tackling Charter Revision

The committee will be limited to five members.

Oxford officials have agreed to form a Charter Revision Committee to review and possibly update the charter.

Four members of the committee have been selected and three of them are Democrats. One more Republican will be added, and possibly an attorney, according to Board of Selectmen meeting minutes.

Selected include: Maureen Stachowicz, a Republican, and Democrats Edward Roman, Lisa Hellauer and Margaret West.

The committee will be limited to five members and once everyone is selected the selectmen will hold a special meeting to go over the charge.

Do you think the town’s charter should be updated?

NO! The 2011 Charter Revision (effective Jan 1 2012) included a provision to limit changes to the Charter to once every five years (or longer). That time has not passed. If an issue is so important to the three selectmen that a revision needs to occur before that, the Charter Revision Commission should be limited to that single issue only, as that was the intent of the 2011 commission, not to open the Charter to a full review.

I would say Janice has a pretty good point besides being a provision of the last charter revision. It sounds to me like somebody has other motives.

Why no Unaffiliated on the committee? Last I looked at the voter registry in Oxford, unaffiliated made up 4100+ of the nearly 8400 voters in town.
