Oxford Town Hall Open, Shelter Remains Open

First selectman says this shows the need for a generator for Town Hall.

The Stephen B. Church Memorial Town Hall in Oxford will be open today at 9 a.m. Oxford officials are attempting to reach staff to make them aware that Town Hall is open and running by a generator.

"Employees are expressing relief and happiness to be coming back to work," said First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton-Rogers.

She said Tax Collector Jackie Orner has to close out the month of October and has reports to complete; Town Clerk Marge West was worried about sending out absentee ballot applications and forms; and payroll needs to prepare paychecks and pay town invoices.

Drayton-Rogers said it is critical that the town has a generator available at Town Hall as it has been needed twice this year: once during Tropical Storm Irene and another during this past nor'easter.

"I will ask our grant writer to apply once again for funds to purchase a generator and hopefully the Board of Finance will approve it this time around," she said.

The Senior Center appears to still be without power, Drayton-Rogers said. All residents, including seniors, should be aware that the Quaker Farms School emergency shelter remains open all day, she said.

"People should take advantage of the warmth, food, hot drinks and companionship the facility has to offer as well as a place to charge cell phones," she said.
