Oxford Town Hall to be Opened Five Days a Week

First Selectman George Temple says he wants to "serve the people."

Anyone who has business to conduct at Town Hall in Oxford no longer has to remember to do it by Thursday: the will be open on Fridays beginning on Sept. 17.

First Selectman George Temple announced last week that unions representing the department heads and workers at Town Hall have agreed, after some resistance, to have a five-day work week.

“I want to serve the people who pay the bills as best we can and be more business-like and professional,” Temple said in an interview with Oxford Patch last week.

Temple and was met with some resistance by town employees. A couple of employee unions met with their union representatives to see if they had any means by which to challenge the decision, but they were told Temple was within his rights to have a five-day work week.

He said he will meet with department heads in the near future to determine whether the Town Hall will still be open a couple nights a week, as it is now.

The senior center also now has a five-day week, Temple said.

“We wanted to bring the seniors to the five-day week as soon as possible because some seniors don’t have air conditioning and that concerns me,” he said.

"He said he will meet with department heads in the near future to determine whether the Town Hall will still be open a couple nights a week, as it is now" I hope so, i work 5 days a week and cant do any business at the town hall if they arent open late at least one night per week and im sure alot of other folks in town are in the same situation as well.

I hope they arrange it such that they open late one day or are otherwise able to be open one evening outside of normal business hours. Otherwise, this benefits what I assume is a relatively small number of people and ends up screwing everyone with a 9-5 job.

Same here....I hope they don't do away with the evening hours. I would rather see the Town Hall closed on Fridays as opposed to losing evening hours.

If he wants to "serve the people" then he'll need to have some late hours for all those who work during the day.

I heard the thought is possibly going to one evening instead of two not eliminating evening hours completely though that isn't clear in this article.

Oh Boy. It's been working fine for all these years. Temple is trying to make a poltical move. Maybe his court dates are light on Friday so he will be more accessible on that day. Unlike when we needed to speak with the First Selectman and he "was out" Yea out in Milford Court with a client.

If people are working 9-5 then an evening would suit the public - fine, opening late a few days to offset the hours makes sense. Now put this in your workplace. How would this effect the average person? Day care, communte issues - there are other things to consider. I applaud George wanting to serve the public AND be more like a business at the same time.

Yes Peggy Freeman: Being open an evening would suit the PUBLIC. If travel or working a few hours in the evening to serve the public is too difficult for an employee then they should not take teh job serving the PUBLIC at Oxford Town Hall. BTW, did George Temple give you a job Ms. Freeman???

If they arent open at least one night per week, then they should at least be open on Saturdays. For those of us who actualy work from 6:30 till 5, opening only buring business hrs means we will never be able to get to the town hall to do anything like...Pay bills, get permits...all that fun stuff. Maybe the TH should consider doing more stuff on line.. I seriously cant see why we need to go to the TH for everything, We bank, shop apply for jobs, all on line, why not have the ability to apply for permits, pay fines, pay taxes, down load parking passes and such all on line?

I asked, waaaay back when Temple was first announcing his run for office, If he could juggle both his career and his job here... time wise... its gotta be hard to keep the practice going when you have to attend to town business also.

Town Clerk's Office Monday-Thursday 9-5 / Monday and Thursday evenings 7-9pm. Town hall is opened evenings for those "9 to 5ers"
Angela August 21, 2012 at 03:49 PM
I can't imagine they would do away with that.

If they are going to go to M-F then do 10-7 on Monday and Friday with an hour off for meal times. This will allow people who work to get there for business and employees to get home earlier without having a split shift. Just a thought...

Sorry, I meant Monday and Thursday.

or work 4 days 9 to 5 and one day 1pm till 8 pm or something like that. youll get 4 first shift days and one second shift day. not bad, espicially if the 2nd shift day is a friday.. wake up late, mosey into work by 1, get out at 8 still have all night to hang out or what ever.. or work tues till sat. thats an option too.
