State Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown, today again called upon Gov. Dannel Malloy to provide leadership in the push to develop the zone surrounding the .
On Wednesday, Malloy put plans for developing the. (Malloy on Wednesday signed a bill creating an airport authority to oversee the state's six airports.)
“Gov. Malloy has been flipping on this issue more than a pancake at IHOP,” Kane said. “All we are asking for is some leadership from the governor. Help us to create jobs in Middlebury, Southbury and Oxford.”
Kane noted that the governor first said developing Oxford Airport was a good idea, but he then vetoed Kane's bill that would do just that.
“Then, after the veto, Gov. Malloy stated he wanted to go forward full throttle to develop Oxford Airport,” Kane said. “Now, he says he only wants to study the issue. The flip-flops are coming almost on a weekly basis. He’s all over the radar screen on this.”
Kane applauded Democrat Speaker of the House Christopher Donovan for his consistent support of the creation of an economic development zone around Oxford Aiport.
“I urge Speaker Donovan to continue to press Gov. Malloy and convince him that developing the zone around the airport will pay huge dividends for our region,” Kane said. “This is not a Democrat or Republican initiative. We all agree we want to create jobs, yet this proposal continues to sit on the runway. Exactly what is the governor waiting for?”
Kane (www.senatorkane.com) represents the 32nd Senatorial District, which includes the communities of Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Middlebury, Oxford, Seymour, Southbury, Thomaston, Roxbury, Watertown and Woodbury.
