Temple Appoints Assistant Tax Collector to Run the Office

Sharon Scinto will serve as acting tax collector for Oxford.

Press Release

OXFORD – First Selectman George R. Temple on Thursday announced that he has appointed current Assistant Tax Collector Sharon L. Scinto as Acting Tax Collector effective immediately.

The appointment is expected to be approved by the Board of Selectmen at the board’s meeting on Sept. 5, 2012 at 7 p.m. She will be earning $56,262 a year.

Temple said he is appointing her acting tax collector for now, as she is a resident, but is working out some personal issues regarding her residency. (Editor's Note: She currently lives in Seymour.)

“I’m extremely pleased to have Sharon as our acting tax collector. She was my first choice and the choice of the town all around,’’ Temple said.

Scinto has been a Connecticut Certified Municipal Collector since Nov. 15, 2007. This certification included passing four classes given over two years and then passing the state of Connecticut exam. She has been the town’s assistant tax collector since 2009 and was acting tax collector for seven months after former tax collector Karen Guillet resigned. She is also the town's Aircraft Registration Official and keeps track of aircraft registered at Oxford/Waterbury Airport. She bills aircraft owners and collects registration fees and reports it to the state Department of Transportation.

Scinto has worked for the town since 1998 as a part-time Registrar of Voters, and afternoon receptionist. She also worked as the Tax/Finance Clerk before becoming certified.

“I am very pleased to be appointed as the Acting Tax Collector by our First Selectman George Temple and I will serve the town to the best of my ability as I have over the past 14 years,’’ said Scinto.

On Aug. 23, as tax collector after Jensen has chosen to take a job in the private sector.

“I am very pleased to be appointed as the Acting Tax Collector by our First Selectman George Temple and I will serve the town to the best of my ability as I have over the past 14 years,’’ said Scinto..... didn't you QUIT this past election? “I’m extremely pleased to have Sharon as our acting tax collector. She was my first choice and the choice of the town all around,’’ Temple said...if she was your 1st choice, why didn't you get her to stay in the election, why did you choose Ms Jensen and not Sharon? With Temple all you get are half truths, broken promises, and embarrassing memories!

Awesome! Now cash my tax check, please. You've had it for over a month.

Why does the article say that she's a resident but currently lives in Seymour? I'm confused... Please help me understand!!!

TK, it would be helpful for you to actually check your facts before making false accusations. 1. I was the Chair for the Screening Committee for the Republican Town Committee for the Nov 2011 elections. 2. Several potential candidates were interviewed, including Jackie Orner and Sharon Scinto. As mentioned to all the candidates, the ORTC was looking for a certified tax collector. 3. At our Republican Caucus, Sharon won the votes of the republicans who attended the caucus. 4. Between the caucus and election, Sharon's personal life changed and she was no longer a resident of Oxford; therefore, the next certified tax collector who resided in Oxford was Cayenne Strumello. Cayenne was placed on the Republican Ticket for the Tax Collector Position and won the election in November.

Bonnie: This was a press release from George's office, but I added the part about her living in Seymour. However, I believe she still owns property in Oxford.

Tanya, why was Ms Jensen asked if Sharon was his first choice? Doesn't seem like much changed since November with Sharon, so why now?...
