Temple Appoints Assistant Tax Collector to Run the Office

Sharon Scinto will serve as acting tax collector for Oxford.

OXFORD – First Selectman George R. Temple on Thursday announced that he has appointed current Assistant Tax Collector Sharon L. Scinto as Acting Tax Collector effective immediately.

The appointment is expected to be approved by the Board of Selectmen at the board’s meeting on Sept. 5, 2012 at 7 p.m. She will be earning $56,262 a year.

Temple said he is appointing her acting tax collector for now, as she is a resident, but is working out some personal issues regarding her residency. (Editor's Note: She currently lives in Seymour.)

“I’m extremely pleased to have Sharon as our acting tax collector. She was my first choice and the choice of the town all around,’’ Temple said.

Scinto has been a Connecticut Certified Municipal Collector since Nov. 15, 2007. This certification included passing four classes given over two years and then passing the state of Connecticut exam. She has been the town’s assistant tax collector since 2009 and was acting tax collector for seven months after former tax collector Karen Guillet resigned. She is also the town's Aircraft Registration Official and keeps track of aircraft registered at Oxford/Waterbury Airport. She bills aircraft owners and collects registration fees and reports it to the state Department of Transportation.

Scinto has worked for the town since 1998 as a part-time Registrar of Voters, and afternoon receptionist. She also worked as the Tax/Finance Clerk before becoming certified.

“I am very pleased to be appointed as the Acting Tax Collector by our First Selectman George Temple and I will serve the town to the best of my ability as I have over the past 14 years,’’ said Scinto.

On Aug. 23, as tax collector after Jensen has chosen to take a job in the private sector.
