Update: The state tournament game between Oxford and Montville that was scheduled for today (Saturday, July 28), has been rescheduled until Sunday, July 29, at 12:30 p.m. in Bristol.
Original story:
For the first time in its history, the Oxford Senior American Legion Post 174 baseball team secured a spot in the final 16 of the state tournament by defeating powerhouse Bristol on Monday at Muzzy Field in Bristol.
With the win, Oxford moved to 22-7 on the season and will compete in the Final 16 tournament.
On Monday, Mike Ippolito pitched nine innings to get the win, allowing just two unearned runs. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out seven. The four runs for Oxford came in the top of the 7th inning.
Dan Kudej led off the inning with a base hit, followed by Chad Sweeney attempting to sacrifice bunt. However, Sweeney's hustle forced an error and the first two were on base.
Colin Haydu followed with a walk, giving Oxford bases loaded and no outs. Following a strikeout, Phil Wilhelmy hit an RBI single driving in Kudej. Riley Streit then reached on an error and allowed Sweeney and Haydu to score. Ippolito was intentionally walked. Chris Sutay followed with a sacrifice fly to right.
