Oxford Baseball, Softball Win State Titles!

Baseball, softball, volleyball complete trifecta!

The Oxford High School baseball team capped off a three-for-three weekend in state title games for the Wolverines Sunday with a 4-0 win over Cromwell in the Class S title game at Palmer Field in Middletown.

Kyle Chudoba pitched a full game for the win, while Bryan Petersen two hits and RBI,  Neil Ring two had two hits and a walk and J.P. DeFrancesco drove in a run and walked with the bases loaded for another RBI.

Earlier in the day, the softball team beat Terryville 1-0 at West Haven High School, also in the Class S title game.

Oxford had just one hit - an infield hit by Sam Orner - going into the final inning, the seventh, when Allison Sweeney ripped a double into deep center field. The very next batter, Katelyn Wentz, hit a ball slightly farther than where Sweeney's shot went and Wentz scored easily from second to win the game and set off a wild celebration on the field and in the stands.

Pitcher Ashley Guillette struck out 15 batters and was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Oxford volleyball won the Class M state title in three sets against Enfield Friday night in Shelton. Oxford's three state titles in one season is a rare feat and may even be a first in Connecticut High School history (we are attempting to find this out as many people have been asking; anyone with an in at the CIAC, please hook it up!).

Oxford also had five state champions in track and all five also earned all-New England honors this weekend

Congratulations to the Wolverines. We have many more stories, photos and videos coming from Sunday's action.
