Oxford Football Ends Season on High Note

Oxford's final game in the South-West Conference is a win over Pomperaug.

The Wolverines wanted this win for so many reasons: It was the last game of the season. It would have put them above the .500 mark. It was against neighboring Pomperaug under the lights in Oxford.

In the end, the Oxford team did not disappoint. The Wolverines defeated the Panthers 27-12 in the snow and rain Tuesday night.

Oxford used its ground game, racking up 292 total rushing yards. Senior Steve Persson led the ground attack with 205 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns on carries of six and five yards, respectively, in the first half.

Senior Marcus Esteves, who had been sidelined with a leg injury for much of the season, showed his grit and desire in the second half as he led the Wolverines downfield and scored on a five-yard run. He finished with five carries for 77 yards.

Senior wide receiver Chris VanKamerik continued to impress, catching four passes for 80 yards. He made a diving catch on a 32-yard pass from senior quarterback Kyle Chudoba, and scored Oxford’s final TD of the season on a flea flicker in which Chudoba handed the ball off and had it flipped back to him before he heaved it to VanKamerik in the back of the end-zone.

Chudoba finished with 113 passing yards.

Wade Prajer completed 14 passes for 200 yards for Pomperaug. He threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Sam Rubenstein in the first quarter. Rubenstein caught six passes for 123 yards. Pomperaug’s other score came from Nick Harper, who scored on a nine-yard run in the third quarter.

Oxford finishes the season at 6-5. Pomperaug ends at 4-7.

This was Oxford's final game as a member of the South-West Conference; the team moves to the Naugatuck Valley League next season.
