Oxford High Has Five State Track Champions

Drayton continues to impress; boys jump 13 spots from seeding to final.

Oxford High School has five athletes who can now call themselves state champions.

Taylor Drayton won the state open championships when she won the shot put Monday with a school record throw of 41 feet, nine inches. She also placed third in the discus with a throw of 123 feet, nine inches and placed 16th in the javelin, with a throw of 102 feet, 10 inches.

The Oxford boys entered the 4x800 event seeded 13th and finished the race in first place with a time of 7:53.49. This time has qualified them for New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Brandon Au, Chris Faber, Ryan Flach and Cameron Swift bested the school record set last year at opens by seven seconds. The four boys, plus Drayton, earned all state honors. 

On the girls side, Drayton qualified to compete in the New England Championships Saturday at Willowbrook Park in New Britain. She also has qualified for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina in all three throwing events. The OHS Girls team came in 17th place with 16 points out of 65 teams in the State Open. This was the best finish ever by an OHS girls' track team and the team was the top local area team.

The girls missed being the top SWC team by two points (New Milford finished ahead of them) and beat eight-time SWC Champion Weston, who came in 20th. Savada Robinson placed 16th in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 48.41 and 25th in the 200 with a time of 26.98.The 4x800 meter team of Kristen Barbaris, Kristen Au, Rebecca Buswell and Jasmine Leung came in 24th with a time of 10:30.
