Oxford High School Sports Roundup

Softball makes states, volleyball now 7-1, girls track continues solid season and boys baseball knocks off Newtown.

The following is a roundup of the recent sports action:

Freshman Guillette Dominant in Oxford Softball Wins

On Wednesday, the Oxford High School softball team continued its impressive season, beating Newtown for the first time in the school's short history by a score of 6-4. Freshman hurler Ashley Guillette was dominant on the mound, striking out 12 batters and allowing just three hits. Sam Orner had a great day at the plate with a double and a three-run homer. The Wolverines now boast a 9-1 record.

The softball team qualified for states Monday by defeating New Milford behind 11 strikeouts by Guillette, who threw a two-hitter. Freshman Kaley Kempf had a two singles and a two-run homer in that game. 

Volleyball Improves to 7-1

The Oxford High School boys' volleyball team defeated Amity 3-1 on Wednesday to improve to 7-1 on the season.

The scores were 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 30-28. The Wolverines were led by Rob Costigan - 19 kills, 13 digs; Pat Cragan - 41 assists; and Jason Mraz and Eric Jensen, who had 13 kills apiece.

Oxford also defeated Kolbe-Cathedral on Monday 3-0: 25-13, 25-7 and 25-17. Costigan had 22 kills, Cragan had 39 assists and J.T. VanKamerik had 12 kills.

Girls Track Now 6-3

The Oxford High School girls track team on Monday beat Laurelton Hall 99-42 and Notre Dame-Fairfield 133-6, but lost to Newtown 103.5-43.5. The team's record is now 6-3.

Jill Miller, Marta Zeglan, Becky Gumbrewicz and Audrey Pratt won the 4x100 relay in a time of 58.1. Taylor Drayton won the javelin with a throw of 98-7 and discus with a toss of 96-10. Drayton also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 32-3.

Caylee Richardson finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:36, and second in the 3,200 at 12:12. Anne Dennen came in third in the high jump, clearing 4-feet, 4-inches.

Marcea Silson won and set a school record in the 3,200 with a time of 12:12 and came in third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:37. Olivia Richter finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:36. Audrey Pratt won the triple jump at 29-feet, 5-inches, and finished third in the shot put with a thow of 28-feet, 8-inches.

Corrinn Niski, Olivia Richter, Lindsey Koski and Becky Gumbrewicz finished second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:53. 

Baseball Team Hands Newtown First SWC Loss

Steven Mahoney threw four and two-thirds innings and gave up just two hits for Oxford, which handed Newtown its first South-West Conference loss of the season by a score of 11-6 on Wednesday.

Alex Miller had three hits for the Wolverines, including a two-run single and a three-run home run. Cathain Pratt had three hits and scored three runs for the Wolverines, while James Michaud had two hits and scored three runs. Dale Keller hit a bases-clearing triple for Oxford (4-6, 2-4 SWC).

For Newtown, Evan Noonan had four hits, two RBI and scored two runs. David Lucia had three hits and scored two runs. And Andy Kelley had two doubles and scored two runs. Newtown falls to 7-3 overall, 4-1 in the SWC.  (7-3,4-1 SWC)

This article seems to be nothing more than an anonymous and free infomercial for Staples.Read More "J" posted this same spam "article" on Patch sites in many towns, just changing the name of the town to match the Patch site. That seems to be the spirit of Staples, free-loading in every way they can. Even this "teacher program" has nothing to do with eliminating the need for teachers to spend their own money on school supplies --it is simply a way for that retailer to take advantage of the situation by attracting the lucrative teacher market. Staples should change their name to MADE IN CHINA OFFICE SUPPLIES, as virtually nothing they sell is manufactured in our country.

It was before they had a solar program, at the time it was the E-2 electrical course. I see America has a chance to build prosperity again if we will be forward-looking about our manufacturing and energy strategies.
