Oxford High Sports Roundup

Softball team finishes regular season with 18-2 record, while volleyball defeats Masuk for the first time.

SOFTBALL

The Oxford High School softball team defeated Weston in five innings, 12-0, at home on Thursday.

Freshman hurler Ashley Guillette struck out nine and surrendered just three hits. 

"The entire team hit well," said Head Coach Jennifer LaCapra.

Natalie Peterson had three singles and scored two runs. Marisa Downs had two hits and a run batted in, while Veronica Cirrincione contributed a double and two RBIs. 

Shannon Barsevich and Gianna Tadduni each chipped in with a single.

The Wolverines ended their regular season with an impressive 18-2 mark, 13-2 in the SWC. The team finished second place in the SWC regular season. 

The team will most likely be playing New Milford at home at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the first round of the SWC tournament.

VOLLEYBALL

The Oxford HS volleyball team defeated South-West Conference rival Masuk for the first time in school history. With the win, the team will receive the No. 1 seed in the SWC tournament, and will play Kolbe Cathedral at home on Monday. Time will be announced later.

Oxford beat Masuk in five games (25-16, 25-15, 24-26, 21-25, 25-6). Noteable performances included - Rob Costigan, 24 kills; Pat Cragan, 53 assists; Nisal Hewathanthri, 30/30 serves and four aces; J.T. VanKamerick, 15 kills and eight blocks; Ed Carver, 27 digs; Eric Jensen and Jason Mraz, 13 kills and five blocks apiece.

Oxford is now 14-3. The win favorably sets the team up for the Class M state tournament, where the Wolverines could land anywhere between a two and four seed if Oxford wins its senior night game at home at 4:45 p.m. against St. Joseph. 

The team also beat Bridgeport Central this week (25-17 25-20, 25-19). Costigan had 16 kills, Cragan had 28 assists, VanKamerick had seven kills and five blocks and  Mraz had 10 kills and five blocks. 

BASEBALL

The Oxford High School boys baseball team lost to Immaculate 6-5 on Thursday to finish its regular season at 7-13.

Steven Mahoney had three hits and scored two runs for Oxford. Kyle Chudoba had two hits and two runs batted in, while Dale Keller had two hits.

For Immaculate, John Cartegena had three hits and scored two runs  runs. Mike Convertitto had a two-run single. Joe Hannigan had an RBI triple and scored a run, while Brad Mannion had a triple and scored a run.

Politicians and or Anti-Americans only believe that the constitutions are a dead document. They are excuses to put forth an agenda. Without Constitutions this country would be chaos and we wouldn't have the freedoms we have today. That is looking at the Constitution as a dead piece of paper instead of a living document. LivingRead More Constitutions read as if they were written yesterday not over 250 years ago. Is the Constitution living or dead. When common sense and ordinary circumstances show that the words of the Constitution no longer apply then the document is dead. That is what occurs when weapons/arms have become so powerful and dangerous that having them available in the numbers you have in this country is tantamount to ultimate murder and chaos. This is definitely not what the Framers had in mind as shown by the words prefacing the 2nd amendment referring to a militia.
