BEST PERFORMANCES
pitcher Jessica DeMaio put an end to five-game winning streak last Wednesday. She lost a chance for a perfect game in the bottom of the sixth inning when she walked a batter, but DeMaio notched a on the way to shutting out the Rams, 5-0. DeMaio also had three hits in the game.
Ashley Guillette of had 17 strikeouts in a key SWC game against Masuk, which had been undefeated, last Wednesday. The ace of the staff outdueled Tatum Buckley of , who recorded 14 strikeouts in the 2-1 loss to Oxford.
Vanessa Alicea of had a career day last Wednesday against the Stamford Black Knights. Alicea went 4-for-5 and scored the winning run as the Eagles won a 7-6 thriller in eight innings.
Jessica Napolitano of put together one of the best hitting performances we've seen in the state this season. Taking on Joel Barlow High School, Napolitano went a perfect 5-for-5 while driving in seven runs. She had a home run, double, and scored three runs in the Hall's 19-2 win over Barlow.
Aliza Guerrero ofwas brilliant is shutting down St. Joseph's last Friday afternoon. Guerrero struck out nine and gave up just four hits in 7-0 shutout over the Cadets. It was the first time Ludlowe had beaten St. Joe's in eight years.
Kyla Pataki of , who is considered one of the best all-around players in the state, was brilliant against Bunnell last Wednesday. Pataki went the distance in the 11-2 win over Weston. She gave up just one hit while striking out 10. Oh, yeah, Pataki also had two triples and a double at the plate.
Taryn Figmic of St. Joe's, an All-FCIAC performer a year ago, is proving that she is one of the best hitters in the area. Figmic had four hits and four RBI's in a 17-3 victory over Trinity Catholic.
Melissa Nelson of (Milford) enjoyed one of the best games of her stellar softball career. The senior had five hits, including her 100th of her career, in Law's 25-3 victory over Hillhouse High in New Haven on Friday.
After watching teammate Patty Sciglimpaglia fire a no-hitter on April 9, Ali Brown of proved that she was taking good notes. In her first varsity start, Brown tossed a no-hitter in a 15-0 win over Bassick. Brown had seven strikeouts in the mercy-rule shortened, five inning victory.
Olivia Hompe, who is arguably the best girl's hockey player in the state, had six goals in New Canaan's 17-8 victory over Fox Lane on Saturday in lacrosse. Hompe also chipped in with an assist for the Rams.
Allison Carey of Lauralton Hall put on a dazzling display of her offensive skills last Thursday against Masuk. Carey scored six goals in her team's 13-12 victory.
Brittany Proudfoot of Masuk did herself proud as she matched Carey with six goals of her own. It truly was the Carey-Proudfoot show.
Erin Kenning and Meredith Bridges of were double trouble in the Nighthawks'18-11 victory over Joel Barlow last Thursday in a South-West Conference contest. Kenning had six goals while Bridges tallied five times. River Kynoch scored five times for Barlow.
Marisa Noto of had a serous offensive outburts against Choate Rosemary Hall in lacrosse last Saturday. Noto scored seven goals in GA's 17-9 victory. Noto too shabby.
Caroline Ogden of had five goals and two assists as the Tigers beat Stamford, 16-7, last Friday afternoon.
BEST GAMES
In the brief, four-year year history of the Oxford softball program, the Wolverines had never beaten Masuk. However, that would all change last Wednesday in a key SWC game. Masuk came into the contest unbeaten at 6-0, while Oxford was 6-1. Kaley Kempf ignited Oxford by crushing a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to stake the Wolverines to a 2-0 advantage.
Ashley Guillette would make sure that would stand up for Oxford. The talented pitcher struck out 17 hitters over the course of the game. But Tatum Buckley settled down for Masuk after giving up the shot to Kempf in the first inning. Buckley matched Guillette strike out for strike out before winding up with 14 on the afternoon.
Behind Guillette's riveting performance, Oxford handed Masuk it's first loss of the season and recorded the school's first-ever softball victory over the talented team from Monroe.
NEW CANAAN-DARIEN RIVALRY RE-NEWED
It doesn't matter what the sport is or what the records are when these neighboring towns square off, it's always going to be a fierce battle. Last Wednesday in a key FCIAC lacrosse contest, New Canaan rallied from three goals down to beat Darien.
Olivia Hompe put on a brilliant move for the Rams to tie the game at 7-7 with just over six minutes remaining. Sarah Mannelly gave New Canaan an 8-7 advantage with 5:40 to go when she ripped one past the Darien goalie. Kristen Gilbert of Darien got the equalizer just 35 seconds later. Hompe gave the Rams a lead they would not reliquish as she fired one home with just over four minutes left in the game. The Rams would hold on for the 9-8 victory.
LOOK WHO'S TALKING
Jessica DeMaio, Darien star pitcher, after missing out on a perfect game but still came away with the no-hitter in a win over rival New Canaan.
"Honestly I wasn't really thinking about it," DeMaio said. "It's kind of in the back of your mind; your in a good groove and a good rhythm out there, I knew that. But the whole no-hitter/perfect game thing you don't even realize out there."
Greenwich Academy Marisa Noto scored seven goals in GA's 17-9 victory over Choate Rosemary Hall in lacrosse.
"We're more of a fastbreak oriented team on offense, but today we used a more settled approach where we could run set plays," Noto said. "This was a complete game for us. And if you combine our ability to run a fast break with the productivity we got out of our set offense and that type of versatility makes us a very dangerous team."
Stephanie Tomas, Weston lacrosse: Had five goals and three assists in a 19-10 win over Bethel.

Vernoica Buzelle, Platt Tech softball -- Went 4-for-5 in a 19-1, six-inning win over Wolcott Tech.
Taryn Figmic, St. Joseph softball -- Had four hits and four RBIs in a 17-3, five-inning win over Trinity Catholic.
Andrew Fishman, Staples boys volleyball -- Had one ace, one kill, 32 assists and five digs in a 3-0 win over Southington.
Lee Goglia, Fairfield boys volleyball -- Had 17 kills and 12 service points in a 3-1 win over St. Joseph.
Ashley Guillette and Kaley Kempf, Oxford softball -- Guillette struck out 17 and allowed only three hits and Kempf hit a two-run home run in a 2-1 win over Masuk.
Ray Kreiger, Derby baseball -- Pitched a complete game, three-hitter with nine strikeouts and also had a RBI-hit in a 5-2 win over Watertown.
Amanda Leone, Law softball -- Doubled and scored the game-winning run in a 2-1 win over Foran.
Cody Maida, O'Brien Tech baseball -- Went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in a 4-3, eight-inning win over Bullard-Havens.
Christian Malave, Foran baseball -- Struck out 12 and also had three hits, including a three-run home run, and two runs scored in a 11-4 win over Guilford.
Kyla Pataki, Bunnell softball -- Pitched a complete game, one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and also tripled twice, doubled and had three RBIs in an 11-2 win over Weston.
Katie Petroski, Seymour softball -- Singled, tripled, hit a home run and had four RBIs in a 9-1 win over Wolcott.
Mary Rose Rappa, Trumbull girls lacrosse -- Had four goals and three assists in a 14-4 win over Masuk.
The Greenwich Academy lacrosse team was in a tight contest against Choate Rosemary Hall earlier today, grabbing a slim 9-7 lead at halftime.
However, the Gators were able to control the offense and play stingy defense in the second half to pull away with the 17-9 victory at home.
Marisa Not led the way for GA by scoring seven goals on the afternoon.
Caroline Ogden had five goals and two assists as the Ridgefield High girls lacrosse team defeated Stamford, 16-7, on Friday afternoon.
Immaculate visited on Friday and was overmatched by Barlow in a 13-0 shutout that was highlighted by freshman Emily Marshall’s varsity debut in a one-hit performance as she fanned six and allowed two walks.
Aliza Guerrero knew from almost the moment she exited the bus that it was going to be a superb day. The tall and talented Fairfield Ludlowe pitcher had that sense about her team going into its game at St. Joseph in Trumbull on Friday.
A little over two hours later, Guerrero found out that her premonitions were right, as the Falcons trimmed the Cadets, 7-0, earning the program’s first victory over St. Joseph in eight years.
Guerrerro hurled a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and one walk.
