Temple Encourages Support for Selfless OHS Drama Club

The drama club will hold performances of "Guys and Dolls" on March 29-31.

First Selectman George Temple encourages the community to support members of the drama club students whose selflessness in the past couple of weeks has been inspirational.

Temple says people should buy a ticket for the upcoming production of "Guys and Dolls" being performed March 29-31 at the high school, 61 Quaker Farms Road, by the Oxford Wolverine Players drama club.

Temple explained in a news release that a week ago, the drama club students gave up their annual fundraiser - a pasta dinner - in order to instead raise the money for the Brandon Giordano Scholarship Fund. Giordano, 15, was killed in a car accident on March 9. He was a sophomore and a member of the high school football team.

The Wolverine Players had already planned their annual pasta dinner for last Friday, but they ultimately decided people should support the Giordano fund instead. The drama club students still held a fundraiser and served food, along with hundreds of other students, educators and community volunteers. But all of the money went toward the Giordano scholarship fund. Several other donations have gone to Giordano's family.

Selectman Jeff Haney said at Wednesday's Board of Selectmen meeting that the community had raised more than $25,000 for Giordano's family and the scholarship fund.

Temple said he hopes the community now pays it forward and supports the drama club, which he called a very deserving group.

“I think it’s wonderful they gave up their fundraiser to raise money for a scholarship for Brandon. They deserve the town’s complete support," he said.

Peformances of "Guys and Dolls" will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29 and Friday, March 30, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.

The play is set in the 1940s and tells the story of a group of gamblers looking for a place to hold a floating dice game. The theater group is in its fifth year and has won multiple Halo awards and other recognition for previous shows such as “Grease’’ and “West Side Story.’’

Tickets are available at the OHS main office or online at www.ShowTix4u.com.
